Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, River Sand is one of the best soil amendments to mix in the existing high clay content soil to relieve compaction and allow roots to penetrate deeper, resulting in a healthier turf grass, You can also topdress turf with River Sand such as bermuda, zoysia, and centipede to level the lawn to prevent scalping and also to encourage water to get down to the roots.

Yes, we produce and sell River Sand at multiple locations throughout Metro Atlanta and Georgia.  That’s not all we sell though.  We have a complete line of other types of sand, topsoil, dirt, gravel, and mulch.

3 to 6 inches is recommended.  Infield mix depth a new field can be easily planned and budgeted.  Adding more dirt to an existing infield may be a little more tedious.  Overall, you do not want the sub-base mixing with the infield mix surface when dragging or playing.  Low spots may need infield mix added more than other areas.  A 3 to 4 inch minimum will help keep the infield dirt surface free of contaminants and unsuitable dirt from below.

Be sure that your mound is in the right position and stable.  Add mound clay to the table and slope of the mound.  Check the height and slope as you install the clay.  Use a hand tamp (good for maintenance) or plate compactor (better) to compact the clay with a minimum depth of 4 inches.  Mound clay in bulk, loose material is easier to form than mound bricks.

A dump truck load of fill dirt is typically 15 to 18 tons.  This can be 10 to 15 cubic yards of dirt.  Remember to consider about 10% more if you are planning on compacting the fill dirt.  Also, be sure to use our calculator to find out how much dirt you need.

You can find some contractors willing to give extra dirt that they have on a project.  So, if you see a house or building with a pile of dirt close by, you may ask the contractor.  However, most of the time you will need to haul it with a dump truck which will add cost.  Be careful to inspect or ask about the fill dirt as many construction sites tend to place anything in the dirt pile that they are getting rid of which may end up with you getting debris and trash you do not want along with the dirt.  Most landscape suppliers, like River Sand, select the best quality dirt that is most affordable for you, and can deliver it when you need it.

River Sand can be used for constructing beaches.  However, it typically contains coarser particles than the soft sand you think of on the beach which is good when waves may erode the beach.  We have many other products that look and feel more like the sand you think about as beach sand, similar to that on the shores of Florida.  Real beach sand is a very fine silica, or quartz, sand.  Beach sand can be from any source such as nearby volcanic rock, shells, or limestone.

A carefully selected clay with the proper silt and clay ratio must be choosen to be blended with sand.  The sand selected to blend must have the proper gradation with most particles less than 1mm and all particles less than 2mm.  Proper blending of the components ensures a uniform, homogenous blend.  The result is a 70:30 sand:clay, 60:40 sand:clay, or any other ratio of sand to clay (really silt and clay) infield mix.

Baseball clay or mound clay is a high-density, compactible clay with a high plasticity.  This clay is best used for building pitcher’s mounds and in batter’s boxes.  It has a higher clay content than infield mix used throughout the infield.

Infield mix is the official term of the dirt found in the infield of a baseball field.  However, people call it baseball dirt or baseball clay.  Product names like DuraEdge®, Turface®, Beam Clay®, and AMP® refer to different types of infield products.  River Sand, Inc.’s brand of infield mix is AMP® or Accu-Mix-Plus® which refers to the custom, precision blend of sand to clay that we provide in our infield mix.
